How To Prevent Tooth Decay While Wearing Braces?

When wearing braces, more efforts must be made to keep the mouth clean and free from plague to prevent tooth decay. In terms of oral hygiene, there are a few major challenges in wearing braces. The main motto is that after removing the braces at the end of the treatment, you should have a beautiful white smile and no cavities or stains on the teeth! Here are six different ways to help you keep your teeth healthy and avoid tooth decay while wearing braces or Invisalign:

Brush After Every Meal

Brush after each meal Whenever you eat, use braces to keep food on your teeth and brush your teeth after every dinner. The longer the food is left on the teeth, the increase the chances of tooth decay. When cleaning the mouth, it takes about ten seconds for each tooth before moving on to the next one. Press gently on the toothbrush to spread the bristles into the holes between the braces and teeth. Brush in and around the entire bracket and wire. We recommend using a soft orthodontic toothbrush with fluoride toothpaste.

Use Special Cleaning Tools

Interdental toothbrushes are very useful for cleaning orthodontic braces. We recommend that you use them together with normal toothbrushes. You may want to prefer using WaterPik to clean around the braces. To use dental floss, you must clean the middle of the teeth with a special floss threader.

After brushing and flossing, there are still some food residues on the teeth. Rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash will help remove residual particles. You cannot directly use mouthwash, you can rinse with warm water.

Avoid No-No’s

When you are in the orthodontic stage, try to avoid using foods that are harmful to your teeth. After removing the braces, you can eat all your favorite foods. At the beginning of treatment, the dentist will provide you with a complete list of foods you can or cannot eat, but things you should avoid: soft drinks; sports and fruit drinks; sticky foods such as ice cream, toffee, or chewing gum; and Hard foods like candies, nuts, apples or carrots.

Floss

You should floss your teeth. The floss threader you need can be found in your supermarket. The professional orthodontist recommended that you should use dental floss daily after brushing your teeth.

Get Regular Dental Check-ups

The importance of regular dental checkups cannot be overemphasized. Make sure to visit your dentist twice a year. One of the benefits of wearing Invisalign braces is that you can take off the floss brush to brush and floss your teeth. The main rules for using Invisalign braces to keep your teeth healthy are: brush your teeth after eating and floss. Of course, you need to clean the aligner.

When eating or drinking anything other than water, make sure to remove the Invisalign holder. If you do not brush and floss your teeth after eating or drinking, particles in food (sugar or acid in drinks) may cause premature aging. Therefore, when the aligner is turned on, do not drink or drink water (except water)! If you have not started orthodontic treatment. Our dentist will be happy to provide you with a comprehensive consultation and discuss treatment options with you.
